Are there any trick to this (cursed evolution), or just use as many different runes as possible and hope to get lucky on the order they come out?

OK, so i'm setting on the luck route. I just use 2-3 or all my different charms, and it finally went through. This is a great dungeon for heroism at level 40 too. Not too difficult (except for the luck at F4) and some good drops to boot!
